Literacy for early years
The Great Race
A new edit of ‘The Great Race’ for Chinese New Year 22nd January 2023.
There are lots of oppotunities to ask who, what, when, where questions when discussing this lovely story of how the Chinese New Year began.
Toy animals and props could be used to act out the story.
The story could also open up discussion about feelings for example how might the ox be feeling when the rat won the race.
Sam's Mystery Trip
This resource is all about Sam’s trip to the zoo. It is ideal for encouraging the use of animal sounds and the language big, small, bigger and smaller. It is an inclusive, interactive resource and there is an introduction to the ‘Who am I game’ at the end. The children could make crowns and stick on their favorite animal. The crowns then have to be placed on the child’s head without them seeing the picture. To play the game the children have to ask questions about the animal on their crown to find out who they are. This game encourages descriptive language of the animals and the animal sounds.
For older children there could be a debate about the role of zoos. Discussing themes about consevation, animal habitat and whether or not animals would be living in the wild.
Hope you enjoy.
